A to Z Blogging Challenge 2015: X is for eXtreme Weather

I've always thought it would be really interesting to be a storm chaser.
These people seemed to let the tornado come a little close for comfort before they cut and run.
Some of the stills they show are not tornadoes but thunderheads.

This video speculates on why the weather is getting more extreme.

Some of what is described herein is not weather-related but instead geological. The mass fish deaths are likely the result of pollution. The solar phenomenon and the reference to the asteroid are astronomical.

I don't believe in "end times" prophecies. Phenomenon such as the actions of the sun, the proximity of an asteroid to the Earth, and most geological and meteorological events are not within human control. However, pollution levels are within our control, and we have a responsibility to control them.

Religion can be a loaded subject. 

We are not promoting any one religion over another.

We are featuring songs which may have spiritual significance to people with certain beliefs.

No belittling or bigoted commentary regarding anyone's beliefs (or lack thereof) will be tolerated.

Songs which have spiritual significance can move people emotionally, and perhaps get them in touch with the realms that exist beyond the physical.

For a Buddhist, chanting and instrumentals which invoke feelings of peace and relaxation are essential.

For Christians, a song of this nature can remind them of the peaceful messages taught by Jesus, and of his great sacrifice.

Jewish songs invoke feelings of celebration and reverence, keeping traditions alive and celebrating those who have gone before.

Muslim chants are often very powerful and moving, invoking strong feelings of spiritual reverence.

Pagan beliefs practices are extremely varied. Wiccan and Pagan songs celebrate various gods and goddesses, or the beauty of nature. Unitarian songs of worship tend to focus on peace, tolerance, and togetherness rather than religious beliefs. 

 I hope you have enjoyed my choices demonstrating songs of worship from various belief systems. I am not an expert on religion, and the thoughts expressed are simply brief explanations of my understanding of the music utilized by a few of the world's religions.

Netherworld Cinema: Cut/Print

Cut/Print is an independently produced 2012 horror film. The full movie can be viewed here.

How far will one go for fame and what happens when things go too far?

I am not a fan of slasher films or shaky-cam style. However, the shaky cam works to provide a grungy feel which is actually in the film's favor. 

While there is gore, it is not the central focus of the movie. The horror is on a more psychological level than most slasher flicks provide. 

If you enjoy gritty, low-budget films and are into the slasher genre, you might really appreciate this film. While it doesn't make my top ten list, I actually found it more interesting than I thought I would. I respect the effort the filmmakers put into their project with an obviously very minimal budget. 

I appreciated Cut/Print more than I do most slasher films.

Video games have come a long way since the days of the arcade, and the old favorites that I remember playing such as Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Galaga, Pac Man, Sinistar, and Tempest.

First person shooters are very popular. I can see the appeal to a degree, but I prefer shooting zombies or monsters to shooting people. 

Some people believe that video games promote real violence. Jim Sterling counters this argument better than I can in this video.

So much of the music scene is flashy. It's refreshing to find artists like young Hannah Trigwell, whose stripped-down performances focus on their music rather than on themselves. Sometimes an understated presentation is the most effective, because there is no splashy spectacle to detract from the delivery of the words and melody.

A to Z Blogging Challenge 2015: T is for Tribute

AC/DC's 1980 album Back in Black was written as a tribute to the band's former frontman Bon Scott, who, sadly, died at the age of 33 after an unfortunate mishap. Unlike the rumors have it, Scott did not choke on his own vomit. He had been left in the back of a car to sleep off his state of inebriation. The weather was chilly, and Bon was a bit asthmatic. As well, he had an upper denture plate to replace teeth that had been broken in a serious motorcycle accident. The plate slipped and further obstructed his airway. The vomit was a reflex reaction by the dying body. It likely would not have killed him had he not already been fatally compromised.

Back on the Chain Gang was written as a tribute to The Pretenders guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott, who died of a drug overdose. He was 25 years old.

This song was written as a tribute Def Leppard's guitarist Steve Clark, whose alcoholism lead to his untimely death at the age of thirty. The scenes set to the song are from The Crow, so the song works as a tribute to Brandon Lee as well. Lee, the son of martial artist Bruce Lee, died in a freak accident on a movie set. He was 28.

Sad songs: we love them, but we hope we never have to live them.

I'm one of the lucky few who have had a romance that has lasted since my teen years up into my middle years and is still going strong. Most early romances lead to heartbreak, and that's the sad truth.

Listening to and singing sad songs can be cathartic. Sing and cry, if that's what you need to do. Write a sad song or poem of your own. Don't be ashamed! Let your feelings show.

Favorite Song - There's this album. It's called Powerage. The whole album is my favorite AC/DC song with Bon Scott on vocals.

There's this other album. It's called Flick of the Switch. It's my favorite song with Brian Johnson on vocals.

You understand what I'm saying? I cannot choose just one song.

Most Hated Song - I don't hate any of their songs, but back in the 1980's, For Those About to Rock was so overplayed that I changed the station when it came on so I wouldn't end up hating it.

 

Favorite Member - I love them all. But this one gives me a special set of feels. And, apparently, I'd like to give him a special set of feels.

Favorite Video - All the live concert footage or just them in the studio. The ones where they hired some other fucker to direct it are hit or miss. Vomit inducing video vixens never set well with me. If I'm looking for an AC/DC video I want to see AC/DC, not a bunch of scantily clad she-slags.

Merch I Own - Too much to name. I'm one day older than dirt, so I've had plenty of time to collect stuff.

Seen Them Live - Three times, and every time some asshole tried to pick a fight with me and tainted the experience. That's never happened with any other concerts I've gone to.
Fans of this band seem to be kind of assholes overall, at least in the U.S., and I don't understand that, because the band members don't seem to be assholes at all.

Familiar words can mean different things around the world.

What they call a bunk house in India appears to be the equivalent of what we call a mobile structure, mobile home, or temporary building in the United States.

I think of a "bunk house" as being a place where field hands or parks and forest service workers sleep.

The above song is representative of the kind of music that is played at raves.
The following is from the Wikipedia entry.

A rave (from the verb: to rave) is a large party or festival featuring performances by disc jockeys (colloquially called DJs) and occasionally live performers playing electronic music, particularly electronic dance music (EDM). Music played at raves include house, trance, techno, drum and bass, hardcore, hardstyle and other forms of electronic dance music. The music is amplified with a large sound reinforcement system, typically with large subwoofers to produce a deep bass sound. The music is accompanied by laser light shows, projected images, visual effects and smoke machines.

Rave culture originated mostly from acid house music parties in the mid-to-late 1980s in the Chicago area in the United States. After Chicago house artists began experiencing overseas success, it quickly spread to the United Kingdom, Central Europe, Australia and the rest of the United States.

A to Z Blogging Challenge 2015: Q is for Quay West

Quay West is a holiday park in New Quay, Credington, South West Wales. Its mascots are a tiger named Rory and a bear named Bradley. It seems like the sort of place that families with young children would particularly enjoy. I thought it would be interesting to blog about when I found the video featuring the odd dancing tiger and bear.

Although I'm a curmudgeon who avoids places teeming with screaming children like the plague, I'd far rather go to Quay West than to Disneyland. Being less well known, it would probably take less of a toll on my pocketbook, and a grumpy old fart like me could probably find activities to occupy myself that involved a minimum of kiddies.

Three Meals a Day is a Korean reality show focusing on cooking and the outdoors. It stars Lee Seo-jin and Ok Taecyeon. It is set in the village of Jeongseon. The show features the two stars utilizing whatever they can find to eat to create a meal. Various celebrities make guest appearances. The show has a fun, upbeat manner.

It's pretty hard to imagine life without phones. They've certainly come a long way in the 160 years since Antonio Meucci constructed the earliest telephone prototypes.

Then you also have items such as the one featured in this video, which I'll probably never own but which look terribly exciting. Who would have thought that one day there would be a phone which was also a camera and a computer? Now, if only someone could invent one that would clean my house for me!

If you follow Team Netherworld's blogs regularly, you might get the idea that we're a bunch of nerds.

Guess what--you're right!

We love science fiction and we love horror. We love classic horror comics. Seeing the sweet stack of cheesy comic goodness that this guy has is giving me a massive Nerdgasm!

My sis (DJ Aurora) and I always loved horror comics. Our father (R.I.P.) said he thought it was a waste of money, but I caught him sneaking a peek more than once! Our mother said that reading them would give us nightmares. Sometimes we did get pretty spooked, but it was worth it!

The guy in the video looks like he'd be a pretty cool fellow nerd to hang out with. Plus, he has an epic beard!

A to Z Blogging Challenge 2015: Video Games: M is for Minecraft

If I had time to play an online game, I would play Minecraft.

My son plays Minecraft. I like the idea behind the game, because even though there is combat against zombies and other monsters, the main idea of the game is creation rather than destruction.

Minecraft was originally created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson. The P.C. version was released in 2009. 

Minecraft is a fairly inexpensive game. At the time of this writing, a one-time download is $30. The classic version is available online for free. There are no creatures to fight in the classic version, it is the original building game.

Wouldn't you just love to have these guys perform at your luau? I know I would!

Even if I never get to Hawaii, I listen to this music and it makes me smile.

I don't know if I'd have to be drunk to get up and hula, or if I'd do it for the sheer joy of pissing people off because I'm hardly young or pretty so I'm supposed to hide away in shame. See, some people have missed the message that fun isn't just for the youthful and the beautiful. It's for everybody. I bet these guys didn't miss that message, though. Seems like they'd be happy just to see people having a good time!

Maybe I'll get to go to Hawaii one day and play on the beach by day, then attend a luau at night and hula away to music like this!

In the late 2000s, it grew from a musical genre into a subculture among teenagers and young adults of East and Southeast Asia. Currently, the spread of K-pop to other regions of the world, via the Korean wave, is seen in parts of Latin America, Northeast India, North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and immigrant enclaves of the Western world.

Miley Cyrus' singing is dreadful, but she has an undeniable talent for comedic acting. I suppose that singing is more glamorous, but she tends to make a spectacle of herself, probably on someone else's misguided advice.

I'd like to see her do more comedy of the intentional kind. She's good at it. Her infamous VMA performance, on the other hand may have been laughable, but it was also torturous to watch.

I don't understand the words, but the video is beautiful and the song is enchanting. I love Indian music. For me it invokes emotion and thoughts of spiritual exploration. I wish I could say I understood more about the culture and the songs.

This particular style of music is called Marathi. It comes from the Indian state of Maharashtra. Here is a page from an informational website, which will explain more about the people of this region and about their music.

I learned a bit about Indian culture when I took a World Religions class to work towards the degree that I may one day have. I can't claim any kind of expertise. India is a fascinating and diverse country. The Indian bloggers I have encountered are creative and intelligent. I also love Indian food. 

I don't think a lifetime would be long enough to learn all there is to know about India. So I hope I get more than one lifetime to continue my studies!

Heartstrings was a popular Korean television mini-series. The series aired in 2011 and starred Park Shin-hye, Jung Yong-hwa, Song Chang-eui, So Yi-hyun, Kang Min-hyuk, Woori and Lee Hyun-jin. It aired on MBC from June 29 to August 19, 2011 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55 for 15 episodes. Heartstrings was a youth melodrama about love, friendship and dreams, set against the backdrop of a performing arts college. 

Many Westerners have a fascination with Asian culture, making programs such as Heartstrings very popular in the United States and Western Europe as well as in Asian countries. In fact, because of Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa's strong overseas fanbase from their previous drama You're Beautiful (SBS, 2009), broadcasting rights to Heartstrings were pre-sold to eight countries including Japan, China, Hong Kong and North America, ahead of its premiere in South Korea.

The Book of Negroes Miniseries

I am watching this amazing Canadian mini-series, which is based on the book by Lawrence Hill. The production, cinematography and acting are incredible. If you aren't horrified by the inhumane treatment inflicted by one group of humans upon another, you simply have no heart.

One would like to believe that such things are not possible in modern times, but slavery still exists in many parts of the world. When people see others as lesser beings based on the color of their skin, their nationality, or any other factor, slavery will always be possible.

Ending such atrocities as slavery starts with refusing to see others as worth less than yourself based on such things as race, nationality, religion, gender, or even sexual orientation. Our race is human, and we must treat one another with equal worth, always.

Forensic documentaries show actual footage from crime scenes and autopsies, and sometimes include re-enactment of crimes. HBO's Autopsy series began running in 1994 and wrapped up in 2008. It featured actual photos from crime scenes and autopsies as well as commentary from the forensic pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden.

While it might seem that only the most truly depraved of souls would be interested in such a program, there is educational value for individuals who might be interested in pursuing careers in criminal justice, forensics, medicine, or psychology. I am personally interested in true crime shows because during my entire life, I've wondered what can cause a person to completely lack empathy and to enjoy hurting and killing others.

A to Z Blogging Challenge 2015: Television Tropes: C is for Cop Show AKA Crime Drama

Cop shows/crime dramas are a staple of television viewing. Over the years, they have become more graphic and intense, and, in some cases, less realistic. I enjoy watching CSI, but no forensic examiner in her right mind would be wearing a low-cut blouse and have her hair down while examining a cadaver. Shows like CSI tend to be splashy and sexy and rely on CGI effects.

Shows such as True Detective have a grittier feel. True Detective is a Southern Gothic/Noir style series which ran from January 2014 to March 2014. A second season is pending. You can watch scenes from the show's first season, such as this one on You Tube. Unfortunately, the embedding has been disabled.

Look at these people. Just look at them, doing things that if I did would end me up in the emergency room for sure.

I envy people who can do things like this. I am able-bodied at this juncture of my existence. I can walk, albeit sometimes painfully. I can groom myself and feed myself. I am capable of learning basic skills. However, I do not have a graceful or talented bone in my body, and I am anti-flexible.

In my next life I want to be acrobatic, athletic, and artistically talented so I can be amazing!

Oh yeah, and it would also be nice not to have a trifecta of mental illnesses.
