Theme Thursday: Wonder

If you were wondering what Spectra wonders...
Spectra wonders a lot of things. The older Spectra gets, the less she knows.
But here is something that is on Spectra's mind a lot of the time.

Spectra wonders why there is so much hatred for people of larger body types.
You should be dancing, no matter what your body type. Without "losing weight" as a reason. Just dance to be dancing.
If your legs don't work, make your wheels dance!
If you're bed-bound, let your mind dance.

No one body type is better than any other.
Some body types allow people to do more things.
But there is zero significant difference in the abilities of healthy thin people and healthy fat people.

Spectra hated her body for years because it's a fat body. She punished it, trying to make it lose weight. The weight would go away for a while, then it would return, plus several pounds more.
Spectra stopped exercising because it wasn't making her lose weight.
It became apparent that attempting to enforce weight loss wasn't working.
Unfortunately, it took 35 years to realize this.

Now, I move. Now I eat healthier food but don't restrict calories.
I don't love my body, but at least now I'm not always berating it.

Regarding the above video:
Wasn't John Travolta great in Saturday Night Fever?
He was lithe and lean, and he could dance.
Now John is heavier.
Why should this make him the butt of jokes?
He's still a great actor.
And I bet he can still dance!

I wonder if we could all be a little nicer to each other, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religion, sexual preference, or size.
It really isn't as hard as we make it.

This video is full of "win!" If it doesn't put some pep in your step, I don't know what will.

Here are some things that I like about the video.

 

1)Joyful and energetic.

 

2) People dancing without having to behave like a bunch of animals in heat.

 

3) Flattering yet modest clothing choices for the women. Everything isn't hanging out.

 

4) Women with curvier body types. I have nothing against people with slender physiques. But in Western culture, we're given the message that only slender physiques are attractive. Most women are not built after the "supermodel" archetype. Most of us are a stockier type of build.

 

5) The video seems to say that if you were to walk onto the scene, you'd be welcome to join in the fun. There isn't an attitude of exclusivity, that only the "hottest" and most popular people are allowed.

 

So, like I said, full of win!

Thicker Than Water

Join me in viewing the 1999 release, Thicker Than Water. It's pretty much a long music video with (really laughable) dialogue included, but it's entertaining in its way.

I find myself wondering why these women bend themselves over backwards and kill each other for these dumb loser guys, but there again, I've been hung up on some really crap choices in the course of my life.

This is not a film to be taken seriously. It is not a masterpiece of social commentary, although it does reflect certain counter-culture elements. It is strictly for entertainment value. If you don't read too much into it, you will probably enjoy it.

Anyway, it's a far more entertaining way to kill an hour and a half than Twilight.

Facts About Chocolate

There are two things in life that must never be resisted or passed up--besides free money. I mean cheese and chocolate, Dahlings! This post will cover the chocolate angle. In the meantime, I will eat some chocolate from this Valentine heart that I got as a gift from my Mommy.

 He also discusses barefoot running. I'd rather not try it. When I was much younger, I forced myself to run. I hated it. I jog in the pool--seriously. Non-impact exercise is much better for my sciatica and knee issues.

 I do want a pair of these though. One of my cousins has a pair, and he swears by them. I wonder if I could get away with wearing them at work. I'm sure they'd--dare I say it--stop people in their tracks. I could eat exotic chocolate while wearing these shoes. Suddenly, my day would seem much cooler!

Was Khalil Islam Framed for the Assassination of Malcolm X?

On the 48th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, questions still remain as to who was actually behind the killing. We may never know the full answer.

Khalil Islam served jail time from 1966 to 1985. Was he wrongfully accused? He offers compelling evidence in the above video.

Khalil Islam passed away in 2009.

Sami Yusuf Playlist

Here is a playlist of spiritual Middle Eastern music (some words are in English) by Sami Yusuf, whose beautiful song "Who Is the Loved One" I shared yesterday. Let his voice soothe your stress.

I am very impressed with this young artist. He uses his popularity to spread positive messages. While his work comes from a Muslim perspective, he also takes on important sociopolitical issues which know no religion. In one song, he mentions the need for clean water for all people. In another, he takes on the Israel-Palestine issue, which is a difficult one to address without being accused of being anti-Semitic if one disagrees with the Israeli position.

He has a strong conscience and uses it to try to make the world a better place. Kudos, Sami!

Confessions of my Middle Eastern Sympathies

And now that I've given my post a provocative title, I'll give the particulars.

I confess that I really like the sound of the above song. I like it for the same reason that I like music from India. It takes me to another place. Because of where I come from in the world, it sounds exotic and mystical. I've always loved this kind of music.

I confess that I find people who hate all Arabs/Muslims to be asshats not worthy of my time.

I'm not a Muslim. I don't resonate with the entire message of this song, because I'm not a monotheist. But I know that this message resonates with some souls. As long as we all treat each other with respect with regards to our spiritual beliefs, how is that not okay?

 If you don't believe that this ass clown represents all Christians

 Why do you believe that this one represents all Muslims?

I've chosen my confession, and now I will return to listening to Middle Eastern music.

The Assassination of Malcolm X

This is the scene from Spike Lee's movie, X.

"We have not yet learned to disagree without becoming violently disagreeable." --Martin Luther King, on the assassination of Malcolm X.

A horribly misguided need to be right at all costs resulted in the assassination of Malcolm X. There are still many questions about who exactly was behind the killing. There were members of the Nation of Islam who were arrested for his murder. Talmadge Hayer confessed to the crime. Norman 3X Butler (AKA Muhammad Abdul Aziz) and Thomas 15X Johnson, (AKA Khalil Islam) were also convicted, but their convictions are questionable.

It is also possible that certain factions of the U.S. government were culpable in the death of Malcolm X. We may never know for certain.

Malcolm X was a true role model. He wasn't perfect, but he was highly intelligent and eager to find the truth in any situation. His desire to do the right thing led him to be at odds with the Nation of Islam, as he came to the point of no longer believing in Black supremacy, but in the need for human equality and justice for all people.

Although I am white, I count Malcolm X among my role models. He stood up for what he believed in, even though it cost him his life. He was willing to change his ways if he discovered he was going down the wrong path. He owned his actions and apologized for his mistakes. Such traits do not know any particular race. They are traits that every human being should attempt to embody.

Rest in peace, Malcolm. The world is a better place for your having been here.

50 Cent: Many Men (Wish Death)

50 Cent isn't bragging about how tough he is, he's telling a story. He isn't glorifying violence, although there is violence in the story. It's worth taking into account what he has to say. It might be easy to dismiss this as "gangsta rap," but that would be erroneous.

This song at any rate does not glorify gang culture although it shows images thereof. Gang violence touches the lives of many people. Gangs are the result of poverty and lack of opportunity. Too little has been done to change this reality.

Favorite Musicians of the Netherworld: Bon Scott

9 July 1946 – 19 February 1980

I was just 15 years old when Bon Scott died. It devastated me. AC/DC was my favorite band, and let me confess a little something to you. I loved Bon. Yeah, I know how cheesy that sounds, but I did.

Talk about a match that never would have worked out in reality, that would have been it. But I loved him anyway. I had always been a good Catholic girl, but when I hit my teens, I started to go a little wild.

I wasn't wild with boys, contrary to popular rumors that I had eight abortions by the time I was fourteen. No, seriously, that was a rumor spreading around about me. I don't know how it started, because I was incredibly naïve about sex. I thought a blow job was blowing in someone's ear, and I wondered why the hell anyone would find that activity enjoyable.

I knew how babies were made, but I was scared to death of doing the act that made babies. I didn't want a baby, and I had heard that it hurt like hell to have sex the first time. (At this point I still believed that pain with sex for women was because of Eve and the original sin, and I hated the bitch for it. What I didn't admit was that I was also pissed off at God for being such a douchebag as to do this to women because of Eve being an asshole. Believe me, I was very indoctrinated.) Nonetheless, I did daydream about doing said act with Bon Scott, and I figured I was going to hell, but I liked him (and AC/DC's music) so much that I figured my immortal soul was a small price to pay.

When I found out that Bon had died, I walked through the little Peyton Place town that was home to me and my misery, feeling terribly lost. Nobody in that town understood me. My parents didn't understand me either. I felt like I was an alien who had been lost from another planet and ended up in this fucking miserable place. I was very bullied and very lonely, and I felt like I'd just lost the love of my life. Well, I had, though he didn't know he was.

Bon was known as a nice guy, even if he was a bit of a randy sort. I would dream about him sometimes. I like to think that maybe he felt a little sympathy for a silly, unhappy girl who had a huge crush on him. Maybe he wanted to show me that I had a friend after all. Who knows. The older I get, the less I know.

Though Brian Johnson is fabulous and I can't imagine anyone else filling Bon's shoes, there will never be another Bon Scott. He was one of those people that just can't be imitated. I think one reason Brian worked out so well is because he wasn't trying to imitate Bon. He was just trying to do the best damn job he could.

Brian believes that Bon came to him one night in spirit and stayed for about an hour, helping him finish the songs he was struggling to write. He has said that he doesn't like to talk about this much, because people think he's crazy when he tells this tale. I don't. But I am kinda crazy.

So today, if we'll have a moment of silence for...

Nah, that's not the way we do it in the Netherworld!

If we'll turn it up to 666 and drive down the Highway to Hell, that's the way to honor Bon Scott in a fitting way!

The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was the result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, in Tamil Nadu, India on 21 May 1991.

The assassination was caught on film by a local photographer, who was also killed in the blast.

Here was my answer.

I enjoyed "riding" with you. I just want to warn everyone, do not every buy a mobile home. Do not ever buy a mobile home. And I repeat, do not ever buy a mobile home. I am stuck with this money pit and its 15% interest mortgage which I bought out of desperation in 2001. I was totally ignorant and it seemed like a good idea at the time. But now I have not only $650 a month mortgage but $550 a month lot rent. They raise that shit every year without fail. Bad deal, People! 

At this point in time, I am also stuck needing to buy a new car because the clutch in my car that has 200,000 miles on it has gone south, and it isn't worth it to pay $2000 to fix it. I'm driving my late father's old truck right now. It's a good truck, but I really need a vehicle of my own, because this is the auxiliary vehicle that I share with my mother.

So...yeah.

In Celebration of Quorthon's Birthday

Today is the 47th chronological birthday of the inimitable Quorthon, a favorite citizen of the Netherworld. Hail! Let the celebration commence!

Thomas "Ace" Börje Forsberg was born February 17, 1966 in Stockholm and died June 7, 2004 in Stockholm. He was a pioneer of the Death Metal and Black Metal genres. A highly talented musician, he played numerous instruments and often mixed his own tracks.

Quorthon suffered from what sounds like cardiomyopathy. He was only 38 years old at the time of his passing.

In spite of his rather private personality, Quorthon was known to be very considerate to his fans, never acting as though he were some sort of "rock star." He considered himself to be a musician, not a "diva" in need of worship. He had a sense of humor about the sometimes ridiculous rumors that circulated about him and the sometimes outlandish (and pornographic) pictures that some fans would send him.

Gone too soon but not forgotten, the talented Mr. Forsberg's music will live on forever.

It's my 48th birthday, and that is not fiction.

Lemuria and the Seven Headed Beast of Revelation

I have long been fascinated by the stories of Lemuria and Atlantis, and this interest became part of the story line in my unfortunately ill fated book. I believe that there well may be sunken land masses which have not yet been discovered and I believe that the people must have had an amazing and wonderful mythology which would have been on par with civilizations such as ancient Greece and ancient Egypt.

What I do not believe at this point in my life is that the Lemurians and Atlanteans had contact with beings from outer space, or that they had flying machines and Jedi-like magic.

I did, however, used to believe this very strongly.

I'm not trying to dis anyone's beliefs. I can only state that I find no compelling evidence that this is plausible.

Ted Nugent: Creeping Out People With Any Moral Compass Since at least 1978

This article refers to Ted's affair with a 17 year old girl named Pele Massa when he was 30 years old, making it apparent that the Tea Party is not particularly choosy about whom they affiliate with, so long as that individual is a wing nut.

What commenter JDS said about Teddy being an ephebophile rather than a pedophile is correct. Nonetheless, when you have to go to the measure of getting custody of a person so you can have sex with her? Incredibly distasteful, and WTF were her parents thinking? Had this been one of my nieces that Creepy Teddy was trying to get custody of so he could bang her, I would have punched him square in the nose!
I'm sure that Ted would call me a pervert for being in a consensual, monogamous sexual relationship with another man. However, both my partner and I are well over the legal age of consent. (I'm 45, he's 41.) I didn't have to get custody of him from his mommy and daddy so I could have sex with him.
Just--yuck!
Why anyone takes this buffoon seriously is beyond me.

The creepiness continues, as shared in this Raw Story article. If the lyrics to "Jailbait" don't creep you right the hell out, I don't know what will.

 While I'm hard pressed to believe Courtney Love about...well, anything, (Love claims that she gave Nugent a blow job when she was twelve years old) that nasty bit of "poetry" certainly implies that Teddy Boy was at least willing to consider banging barely pubescent girls. 

 The cover of "Love Grenade" has very little to do with love and a whole lot to do with demeaning and dehumanizing women.

 I really and truly feel sorry for Ted Nugent's daughters. Imagine having a father who made it plain that he considered women to be placed on this Earth strictly for the sexual pleasure of men. While Gene Simmons may have had his way with a lot of women, he has taught his daughter to be strong and independent. Gene may sexualize women, but he also sexualizes himself. He doesn't debase women.

I really and truly wish that Ted Nugent would be stampeded by a herd of female animals. Any animals, but the fact that they were female would make the justice extra sweet.

I'd like to end this post with a Happy Valentine's Day wish to anyone who is in a consenting adult relationship, be it heterosexual or homosexual. If you didn't have to get their mommy and daddy to sign over custody of them to you so you could legally bang them, you're doing something right.

 Yes, even these two.

Subway Errs In Its Support of The Biggest Loser

How tight do your blinders have to be on if you can't see what a horrible program "The Biggest Loser" is, and that it is not teaching healthy habits in any way, shape, or form. I went to grab lunch at Subway, and found that they too have jumped on The Biggest Loser's bandwagon of bull.

This is what I said to Subway on their Facebook page.

Your sandwiches are great for a quick lunch, but I'm not keen on your support of "The Biggest Loser." This vile program purports to encourage "health," but the tactics utilized are anything but healthy. This program is a weight loss competition, period. They utilize tactics such as dehydration, extreme calorie limitation, and over-exercising to the point of injury and vomiting. None of this equates with healthy behavior. Equating weight loss and health is erroneous in the first place. Adapting healthy habits for better overall well being REGARDLESS OF WEIGHT LOSS is much more likely to result in long term adherence to said healthy habits. Please support Health at Every Size if you really want to promote health.

They'll likely delete my post, but perhaps a few people will see it and think about it before they do.

The Retirement of the Space Shuttle Atlantis

Sci fi fans! Science geeks! True scientists! This is for me--er--for you! For you and me.

Like a lot of kids, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. But my inability to ride on anything that goes around, and around, and around, and around (Ugh! I'm getting sick!) at speeds faster than a merry go round or ferris wheel means that dream was never meant to be.

I'll just stick to the confines of my home world and look out at the Universe from my deck through my trusty little telescope that my mom and pops (rest in peace, Daddy) bought me for my birthday in 1989. Still have it, never have seen reason to upgrade it.

A date to the planetarium? My fave! (Yes, Dylan, if you're reading this, that could be taken as a hint!)

Of course I still love hunkering down on a cold day with a cup of cocoa and a bowl of popcorn and watching my favorite sci fi movies and television shows. Because space is the final frontier, and it's fun to boldly go where no queer has gone before!

The Great Bell Chant: End of Suffering

Following my post wherein I feature a video disputing the omnibenevolence of the Christian deity (Yahweh) I have been asked what it is that I do believe.
At the crux of my belief system is the belief that all things are composed of energy. Energy cannot be destroyed, it can only change form. Thus, when asked if I believe in an afterlife, my answer is yes. The energy which powered the body does not cease to exist when the body dies. It takes on a new form. It is my belief that this energy generally finds a new body to inhabit. There is no set period of time in which it "must" do this.

Can we change the world on a spiritual level as well as a physical one?

I believe that chants, prayer, and spells are all forms of tapping into energy, of altering energy currents, of increasing energy. The form is not so important as the intent. One belief system's form of tapping into the energy is not superior to another belief system's way of doing so.

I have been accused of ridiculing Christianity. I repeat that I do not ridicule Christianity as a whole. I'm completely in favor of religious tolerance, and that includes not ridiculing other people's belief systems, whether or not I am inclined to belief the particulars of said system. But I do ridicule dogma and sanctimoniousness.

Let us raise the energy in favor of love, tolerance, and peace.

Serj Tankian is an admirable individual. He is intelligent and thoughtful even when expressing dissenting opinions. Unlike some, who become indignant or belligerent, Serj calmly expresses his belief that the Armenian genocide needs to be acknowledged, and that the U.S. government has been too fearful of offending Turkey. Pain and Mental Illness

Steven wrote a poem about pain to go with his insightful painting. I wanted to share my response.

I live with chronic low-grade pain (which I almost spelled "pane.") What color would it be? Muted red, perhaps. On a good day, light pink. Like my mental illness, I'm used to it. Unlike my mental illness, there is never a question that I would get rid of the pain if I were able.

The mental illness has affected the way I think, and I have had it all my life. I sometimes think if it were taken away, I might not know how to deal with the world as a "normal" person. 

Just like some people who have been blind all their lives have trouble navigating the world if by some miracle their sight is restored. I am blind to what it is to be "normal."

I also wanted to respond to Adam's very kind post in which he mentioned my struggles.

I was initially discouraged by the asshattery of other people. Then I overcame that. Now I'm discouraged by the publishing process. It is NOT FUN! It is expensive and time-consuming. It probably doesn't help that I have obsessive-compulsive disorder. I hate being my own publicist. If you can't afford to have a team helping you promote your work, and you don't enjoy doing this sort of shit by yourself, woe betide you.

So, yeah, I don't know if I'll ever publish another book. I'm going to get the one I'm (still) working on out there, but that might be it. I don't expect to get a huge readership for it, not nearly enough to cover the expenses of getting it published. 

And that's currently where I stand.

 

 

 

Take a Break

Why so serious? Take a break from heavy concerns and watch these guys play games. This video is full of funny fails and stuff that would be horrible in real life made hilarious.

If you liked that first one, there's a lot more of the same from the boys. You may find yourself taking breaks all day to watch them crash things and crack beauties. Jokes that is!

Dancing Around the World

This guy goes all around the world and gets people to dance with him in various different situations. Which is really pretty cool. Music and dance are great tools to bridge cultural gaps!

Secrets of Atlantis

Another Atlantis documentary. I enjoy this stuff, although if they start delving into the realm of UFO's and an ancient civilization capable of space travel, they tend to lose me.

Speculations on Lost Atlantis

Do I believe that there may be a sunken land mass which for the sake of argument we may call Atlantis?

Absolutely. Why not? There are other sunken cities. 

Do I believe that the inhabitants thereof were capable of space travel and had technology that surpassed modern knowledge?

No.

I am an open minded skeptic. I believe that anything is possible even if not probable. But I do not find it highly probable that the Atlanteans (for the sake of argument, let us call them that) were a technologically advanced race to a degree surpassing twenty-first century knowledge. If they existed, they would have had a society similar to the ancient Grecians or Romans.
