Semi Trailer vs. Chock

Here's something for you motorheads. They're testing to see how much force it takes for this semi trailer to run over a chock.

In my neck of the woods, we have some steep mountain roads which require runaway truck ramps. Here, a driver tests a runaway truck ramp in North Bay, Ontario. One can imagine that if a driver was forced to pull over to do repairs or wait for a tow on one of these steep roads, having a good chock would be essential.

Since I mentioned Motörhead, I'd better play some. Wouldn't want you fiends going riot on me!
Several bands have covered this iconic slab of metal glory. I like Satyricon's cover.

I also enjoy Sepultura's cover. What's not to like?

I left this comment on the Satyricon video. I know I'm wasting my proverbial breath, pissing into the wind, leading a dead horse to water, and trying to talk sense to fools, but it needed to be said.

I should never be surprised at the level of stupidity of You Tube comments. They truly reach a new low. Someone doesn't agree with you? Call them a homo or fag, because being a homosexual is teeotally grody, like ew for shure! Or the comment that you don't like the original version by Motorhead because Lemmy "grosses you out." In other words, you only want to listen to bands that look good to you, which isn't shallow at all.
Being a little older, I remember listening to the original version. Such amazing, hard music could not be ignored, and the lyrics are actually intelligent and thought-provoking. I like a good party song, but I really appreciate something that makes me think. Lemmy may not be the best looking guy in the world, but I don't listen only to music by guys whom I find "hot." I listen to music I find good, period. It could be played by Jabba the Hut and a band of Juiblex, and I would still listen.
This is a great cover. The Sepultura cover is also great. Both Satyricon and Sepultura are true to the spirit of the original song but put their own unique twist on it. That's what makes a great cover.
The original will always rise to the top for me, but that doesn't negate the worth of the newer renditions.
I know this final thought will be ignored and/or ridiculed, because, You Tube, but couldn't we all just listen to and appreciate the music and stop looking for reasons to bandy about schoolyard insults?

M is for Metal

Metal, glorious metal! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways, and thy many genres.

Metal was born in the late 1960s in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in the blues, folk rock, and psychedelic rock.

From these mighty beginnings, many innovative offshoots of the genre were formed.

Black Sabbath are one of the greatest forces behind the formation of the metal genre. Deep Purple's hard-driving guitar riffs also played a part, as did Led Zeppelin's mystical lyrics. The term "heavy metal" may have been influenced by Led Zeppelin's lyrics "talk about heavy metal underneath the hood." The heavy sounds of Slade were surely an influence as well. 

Jimi Hendrix' inimitable heavy blues played a part in the development of the metal genre. Steppenwolf was also an influence, with songs such as Born To Be Wild. The heavy, distorted, epic psychedelic sound of Iron Butterfly was also a factor in the early metal periodic table.

Some people feel that metal is an untalented and uninteresting genre. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is as varied as the Universe itself in its expression, and new forms are brought to light in the modern age, as well as new artists adapting the classic styles and making them their own. Metal is here to stay.

Talented Swedish multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and music producer Ace Forsberg is one of the most underrated and most misunderstood musical talents. He was on the forefront of the Scandinavian extreme metal scene, but he didn't personally take the imagery seriously. It was theatrics, and he seemed quite bemused that anyone would take such things to heart.

Quorthon was a very private person. He never talked about his personal life. When asked his real name, he enjoyed using such pseudonyms as "Per Vars" (perverse.) He had a dry, off the wall sense of humor, which tended to be a bit bawdy.

Those who met Quorthon said that he was very unaffected by his renown. He was polite and gracious. He enjoyed helping young people trying to become successful in music.

Quorthon was very interested in Scandinavian history and mythology. These interests form the basis for many of his songs.

Unfortunately, Quorthon had serious heart problems, which ended his Earthly life at only 38 years of age.

Cie Cheesemeister, our infamous and rather cagey leader of Team Netherworld, liked Quorthon so well that he was the inspiration for one of her first Netherworld characters, along with fellow Swedish metal tunesmith The Spooky Guy (Per Yngve Ohlin.)

But enough from me. It's time for you to listen to Quorthon's band, Bathory.

Ozzy Osbourne is a British heavy metal vocalist. He was the original frontman for Black Sabbath until he was replaced by the late Ronnie James Dio in 1979.

Ozzy was born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948 in Birmingham, England. He has six children: Elliot, Jessica, and Louis with first wife Thelma; and Aimee, Kelly, and Jack with second wife Sharon. 

Ozzy has six grandchildren.

Although he has had personal and substance abuse issues throughout his life, Ozzy is a deeply sensitive and caring individual who is devoted to his family and friends. He was devastated when guitarist Randy Rhoads was killed in a plane crash on March 19, 1982.

Ozzy's son Jack was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. We wish him the best in combating this devastating disease.

Kiss may be a bit Kampy, but Kiss are always Kool.

Kiss formed in New York in 1973. They drew attention for their ourtlandish stage makeup and pyrotechnics, but without the musical chops, they would not have lasted.

Kiss members take on four characters: the Cat on drums, Demon on bass, and Spaceman and Starchild on guitar.

The four original band members were drummer Peter Criss, bassist Gene Simmons, and guitarists Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley. Simmons and Stanley have remained constant members of the band. Frehley and Criss departed due to disagreements.

The current lineup consists of drummer Eric Singer, bassist Gene Simmons, and guitarists Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer.

I'm not going to go into stories about the band's problems. This post has one purpose: to let you Get Kool with Kiss!

Ghost is a Swedish doom metal band. The identities of the band members are unknown. The Nameless Ghouls wear robes which hide their faces. Vocalist Papa Emeritus wears a skull mask.

The band utilizes tongue in cheek Satanic imagery in their stage act.

We would like to mention that this is the twenty-second anniversary of the death of another iconic Swedish metal musician, Per Yngve Ohlin, aka Dead of Morbid and Mayhem. He would have been 44 years old this year. We hope he has found peace on the Other Side.

In Celebration of Quorthon's Birthday

Today is the 47th chronological birthday of the inimitable Quorthon, a favorite citizen of the Netherworld. Hail! Let the celebration commence!

Thomas "Ace" Börje Forsberg was born February 17, 1966 in Stockholm and died June 7, 2004 in Stockholm. He was a pioneer of the Death Metal and Black Metal genres. A highly talented musician, he played numerous instruments and often mixed his own tracks.

Quorthon suffered from what sounds like cardiomyopathy. He was only 38 years old at the time of his passing.

In spite of his rather private personality, Quorthon was known to be very considerate to his fans, never acting as though he were some sort of "rock star." He considered himself to be a musician, not a "diva" in need of worship. He had a sense of humor about the sometimes ridiculous rumors that circulated about him and the sometimes outlandish (and pornographic) pictures that some fans would send him.

Gone too soon but not forgotten, the talented Mr. Forsberg's music will live on forever.
