Cheesy Cinema Review: Hold the Dark

Netflix' Hold the Dark is fascinating conceptually, and the cast does a stellar job of playing their roles. But when the viewer comes away from a film saying "why the hell did any of that happen?" it isn't a good thing.
I haven't read the book that this film was based on. Maybe if I had read the book, I'd understand the film better. However, a well-executed film would not require the viewer to have read the book to understand what is going on.
I feel that the film tries too hard to avoid being Another Werewolf Movie and doesn't do enough to ensure that the viewer understands the reason why All The Spooky Weirdness is transpiring in the first place.
I wanted to like this movie. I wanted it to live up to the hype and the stellar cast. It did not do so.
I wish that Netflix hadn't changed their viewer rating system from stars to a thumbs up/thumbs down. I would have given this movie three stars with Netflix' previous system. As it stands, I didn't rate it. The performances were too good for it to merit a thumbs down, but I came away too befuddled for it to merit a thumbs up.
One should not have to rely on search engines to find an explanation for why events transpired in a movie. Arguably, I did have to do this for some events in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which I found frustrating, but I understood the majority of the plot in these movies and would give both of them a solid thumbs up despite the various points of confusion. Since my reaction to Hold the Dark was "well, that happened, but why?" I cannot say the same for it.
Hold the Dark left me hungry for more, and not in a good way. It was the kind of hunger one has after eating a not vomit-inducing but unsatisfying deli sandwich from a service station because there isn't anything better available.
Cheesy Rating: 2.5 out of 5 wedges

DAY6 "I Wait(아 왜)" M/V

South Korea is taking over the world with adorable boy bands and soapy dramas.
When I was in my youth, I would have been falling all over myself watching these guys.
Now, they seem like the nice, polite sort of lads that I'd want to invite for tea and introduce to my daughter or niece if I had a daughter or niece.

Seeker - Alone (Ft. Corey of Bermuda) [HD] 2013

DJ Motley Mick suggested I check this out because I like death metal. It's powerful to be sure, a talented lesser known band. I tend to prefer my death metal a little more on the sludgy side, and this is a little more on the thrash side. A good suggestion though, Mick, thanks!

10 Cover Songs That Are Better Than The Originals

Sigh....
Sometimes it isn't a matter of better or worse, it's just a different expression and both are great.
By the way, the Thin Lizzy version of Whisky in the Jar is my favorite version. This is an old Irish folk song. Thin Lizzy was not the first group to perform it.
It's fine if you prefer the hard rock and metal version of these songs. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that those versions are "better."

Pantera - Cemetery Gates (Official Music Video)

Rest in peace, Vinnie Paul Abbott.

March 11, 1964 - June 22, 2018

If anyone has some sort of issue with me getting emotional and waxing esoteric right about now, that's too fucking bad.
I love Vinnie Paul and I loved his little brother, Dimebag Darrell. Not like romantic or sexual love. More like filial love, and lots of respect.
I don't think Vinnie Paul ever got over Dimebag's death. I think he and his little brother are reunited now, making up for lost time. I wish I could give them both a big hug and tell them thank you just for being here in this sometimes crappy world.
Dime and Vinnie Paul never put on airs. They were just two regular guys who happened to be incredibly talented. They were the real deal.
Fly free, Vinnie Paul, good Buddy. Much love always and forever. Thank you for being here. Maybe I'll see you on the other side when I get there.

Love, Cie

30 Days of De-Objectification: Heavy Metal Angel

Per Yngve Ohlin, AKA Dead
January 16, 1969 - April 8, 1991

30 Days of De-Objectification:
Heavy Metal Angel

The tragic tale of Per Yngve Ohlin, vocalist for the Swedish death metal band Morbid and the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, evokes strong emotional responses. Per suffered from severe psychological disturbances. Reading about him in the chapters translated into English from Blod Eld Död, I have the feeling that he may have been autistic. He would become greatly upset if disturbed while performing a task. Despite his intelligence, evidenced in his thoughtful and provocative song lyrics and his clever though disturbing artwork, he did poorly in school.
After Per’s parents divorced, he changed schools. His previous classmates were used to his unusual behavior and were generally tolerant of him. His new schoolmates bullied him, and, on one occasion, beat him so severely that he ended up clinically dead. Following this event, he became obsessed with death and referred to himself as not being alive. The head trauma he incurred from the assault may have caused him to develop Cotard Syndrome, a rare condition in which a person believes their body is dead.
Although he has been gone from this world for twenty-seven years, Per continues to be exploited, both by those who insist on seeing him as some sort of icon for evil and those who look only at his physical appearance without seeing the very troubled human being behind the flowing blond hair and the striking, angular face.
Per was obsessed with occult imagery, but he wasn’t truly evil. He was angry at a world which had caused him grievous harm. Many of those who attacked him probably identified as “good Christians.” It’s no wonder that he wanted to be the opposite of his attackers or that he dreamed of being able to exact revenge against those who injured him.
As for the idea of Per being some sort of sex god, there is no evidence that he was ever sexually involved with anyone or that he even had any interest in sex. There have been fantasies written about him by a certain contingent of horny female fans, usually postulating him as some sort of vampire king or demon lord. I wish I could say these fictions were worthy of their subject. Most of them are poorly written and I wouldn’t feel right about quoting the explicit and ludicrous scenarios postulated therein.
Worst of all, there are still people who see fit to share the actual, post-suicide image photographed by Per’s former bandmate, Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth. My opinions of Aarseth are not exactly favorable, but I became somewhat more sympathetic to him after viewing interviews with his former bandmates and schoolmates, Kjetil Manheim and Jorn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud.
Regardless of my personal opinions of Euronymous, photographing the corpse of your housemate, even if you weren’t particularly kindly disposed to him, is unconscionable. As the surviving members of Morbid said on the liner of their 2011 release, The Year of the Goat, “No thanks to the distributors and buyers of the post-mortem pic. Fuck you.”
Those words of wisdom sum things up perfectly.

With love and respect,
Cie
